“People don't buy what you do; they buy why you do it. And what you do simply proves what you believe”― Simon Sinek, Start with Why
Why do you do what you do?
Or if you are changing career, Why do you want to do what you want to do?
This is the question that we start with in all of our Another Door experiences.
When you want to change something you have to start with where you are first.
But it’s not just about people buying from you.
It’s about you understanding why you are spending energy on something.
Why you are spending your time, even your money.
And sitting with that question longer than you want to will be time well spent.
After you’ve asked yourself why, ask again, and again.
And it’s helpful for any moment in time that you feel a bit stuck, or lost, or fed up. That question - Why am I doing this?
It might just be - ‘because’. But there will be nuggets of wisdom somewhere in the next few whys you ask.
If you are applying for jobs, its the question that might be difference if getting / not getting the job. Why do you want this job? Why? Why?Why? - it’s the third why that will help you have the best answer to that question.
So. Why? Why am I doing this? This note, every day?
First Why - It’s helping me to share my thoughts, and get me writing regularly, and find out what other people think about things
Second Why - Because I want to get better at writing, and gain confidence in writing regularly to maybe pitch a regular column at some point, and I like creating communities of people sharing, connecting
Third Why - Because I enjoy exploring ideas, and getting other people’s perspective on ideas to keep me growing and learning - it’s where I get my joy
These were my scribbles the first time I did the 3 Whys for this newsletter.
I’ll keep checking in with the Why. Is it still the same, does it still make sense to me? Is it still why I do what I do?
Whys can change. They can morph into something else. But your Whys will always be an important question to explore.
So - I’d love to hear, what is your Why? Why do you do what you do?
