“A ritual is the enactment of a myth. And, by participating in the ritual, you are participating in the myth. And since myth is a projection of the depth wisdom of the psyche, by participating in a ritual, participating in the myth, you are being, as it were, put in accord with that wisdom, which is the wisdom that is inherent within you anyhow. Your consciousness is being re-minded of the wisdom of your own life. I think ritual is terribly important.”
― Joseph Campbell
I read this in an article today. I had to read it a few times. And maybe I’m still pondering…
But it did make me think about small rituals that we might do to help us do something else, to help set the tone (or set the myth as Joseph would say!).
Like before a coaching call I always light a candle, dim the lights and open a window for fresh air. It’s just a habit, but maybe more a ritual - it resets the moment so I can turn up to the call with a blank space for my client.
And before meetings. Just a 5 minute small reset ritual can make all the difference to how you turn up, and what you, and others get from it.
And lets not ignore everyday rituals, making tea or coffee, morning routines, walking practises. Anything that helps us mark a line in the day and step in to the space.
Do you have rituals?
Do they help you own your day?
