Find your purpose they say… it’s everywhere! The pressure to find meaning. Something deeper. So deep it often feels very hard to find.
But sometimes the purpose, your purpose is very straightforward. You don’t need to find it. It’s just right there in front of you.
Last year wasn’t a great business year for me. Things got very hard, and very low. So I did a bit of contracting to pay bills, and give myself some time to think. I didn’t want my usual big strategy / change contracts. I wasn’t in the right place for that. I needed something straight forward which hardly needed my brain. A great opportunity came a long helping out on a change project for a few months. Perfect. Nothing complicated, straight forward work.
But the whole time I had a wrestling feeling. I should be doing something more. Something deeper. I’m more than this. I can contribute so much more. And it was hard to not feel a bit fed up, despite my prep talk about how perfect this job was right now.
I had to keep reminding myself of the purpose.
The purpose was to pay bills and give myself a break from the pressure of pitching and trying to win business.
Purpose achieved.
Sometimes purpose is just straight forward need. And you don’t need anything bigger or deeper. We have to do what we have to do, sometimes the pressure around us to find something that might change the World, or that we are missing something if we aren’t doing our dream job 24/7. But reality is that life will present a mix of needs and wants opportunities. You have to know when sometimes your purpose is to just to help you with what you need.
