When was the last time you did something completely pointless?
Something that had really no point to it, no tangible reward, no good enough justification. You just did it, because.
Was it really pointless?
I was recently on a workshop where we spent some time creating origami boxes. The workshop was not about origami, it was about leadership, thinking, learning, growing.
At first I had a lot of resistance, making a paper box was not what I’d been expecting to do, and this sudden instruction to create caught me off guard.
I had to do some fast internal thinking to catch my thoughts, loosen up the resistance and get the most from the workshop. My thoughts ran a search quickly trying to find a purpose to this exercise. After a few seconds it found the one and only conclusion, the purpose maybe be unknown, there maybe no purpose, but you wont know until you join in and give it your best shot.
And so I did. And created, and reflected while doing so, and found that I’m quite competitive, I really wanted to get it right but also struggled to follow instruction. And the connection with the others doing it. We relaxed, and laughed. and explored, and shared.
And so from what could’ve been a completely pointless activity, and therefore avoided, came a brilliant fulfilling use of time, not to be missed.
So the thing to ponder today.
What are you missing out on because you think it’s pointless?
