What is money to you?
I didn’t think too much about money until I started my a business. For 23 years I had a salary. I knew exactly what was coming in every month, and, most months, exactly what was going out and barely thought about it.
But then self employment challenged me to think about money harder. Running a business presents an opportunity to earn without limits, but it can also be a challenge to be without earning.
Money becomes an acute focus.
And if you aren’t watching it and working on it, it can become a huge problem. But that’s not just about numbers. Money is also a mindset.
We all have a money story and more than often it holds us back.
Your Money Story
“There is never enough”
“I’m no good with money”
“Save for a rainy day”
“You have to work hard for money”
“People with money are bad people”
“I’m not worth it”
“Money is dirty”
At some point in your life you may have experienced something which now directs your mindset concerning money. And now you operate from that mental space, whether it’s a conscious or unconscious space.
Running a negative money story can interfere with many parts of your life, not just financial success. Your money story affects how you feel which then shapes the actions you take and eventually, the results you get.
You might find yourself not going for a job because the salary is too much (you are not alone, many people do this!), you might not charge your full worth because you feel uncomfortable saying how much you are out loud (I’ve done this!), you keep giving things a way free because you feel you can’t charge (yes me too!).
By working on your money story you can change not just your financial goals but also how you feel about going after life goals, how you think about work, and how you navigate change with less worry.
So what is your money story?
How is it helping you?
How is it holding you back?
