“Every now and again there is an irrefutable argument for building on what’s there, not chucking it away” Michael Johnson, Now Try Something Weirder
We think that change has to be completely brand new. Or our idea has to be very different from anything else to be successful. Or that we have to be original, otherwise why bother.
One of my clients said ‘I want to do XX, but it’s all been done before”. And it has but not their way, with their version. There is always room for your version. Musicians never say ‘people are making music already, I won’t bother’.
Sometimes the answer is looking closer at what is already there, when our temptation is to scrap it and start it. Bounce off the things that are established, what is your translation?
Think of all the brand refreshes you’ve seen. Done well they always have fresh spirit and new energy. They haven’t thrown anything away, they have just dialled up the new important bits, and faded out the things that are no longer relevant.
So if you want to start something new, you are rethinking a project, your business, your career, your life, you don’t have to scrap anything, lose anything, stop anything, and start all over again. You can evolve, progress, build on all the brilliant things you have already, the brilliants that already around you.
You don’t have to through away the good stuff that you have already.
