This is a real thinking out loud note today.
The thinking is just forming but I’m intrigued.
Today I’ve developing our programme which supports people through change at work. You know that moment They announce their grand vision and you either have to ‘get on the bus or off the bus but you don’t even know where the bus is or how to get on it, let alone if you want to get on it.’
Our programme is in that space of creating a framework to work through, so you can own change at work, and not feel Done To.
But, that isnt my ponderings today. Rather a specific element that came up while I was researching.
Most of the research concludes that the majority of ‘humans (employees)’ aren’t great at change. We fear it, avoid it, get worried by it.
And yet.
I observe how quickly we are to drop ‘stuff’ and jump on to the next new shiny object.
On a micro and macro scale.
We all got deeply disturbed and vocal about the G20 talks, Covid, Afghanistan, even Ukraine - it consumed us and we all moved into a space of shifting our minds towards it. And then Will did a thing with Chris and we suddenly all move on again. And then the next thing. And the next thing.
(Unless it directly impacts us and and then we are left with all of that impact remaining.)
Surely this is change.
Or is it actually short term distraction.
Different to deep change.
Of course Crisis - and what we perceive as crisis, plays a part but not always.
So change is where we are aware, and we bring it into our conscious, and make it part of our growth and decision making.
Distraction is a form of change, but carries less meaning, just a fleeting moment where we put our attention somewhere else, but perhaps we spring back into who we were, what we were doing before hand.
But either way it shows that we are actually not as resistant to change as we might think. That we might even like it.
But the difference is what we do with it. How we decide if this change becomes part of us or we let go of it and carry on.
I did say this was a raw ponder today.
As i continue to develop the programme it’s something I will certainly be looking at closer. But it completely changes the foundation thought that we are all resistant to change.
Or of course I might conclude that this was also just a distraction!
Would love to know if any of that made sense or resonated or just distracted you for a moment.
